Just cycling

Hello,

Just been cycling and that is it. To work everyday and back more or less 15 miles, average speed so far this week: 18.5mph. I also did a 36 mile bike ride averaging about that speed on Sunday.

I'm concerned though that I'm losing my upper body strength, so I've bought a Powerball. Max so far is about 8000, though my housemate Chris has already topped it at 11151! I'm sure I can beat that with three weeks practice. :-D

All the best, and looking forward to three weeks time.

Mark

Powerball, hm, I am intrigued. Plus I want one. Dunno if they work, they just look cool.

they're all the rage these days, they are very good for your forearms, so long as you want to be able to just grip something (i.e. an oar) very hard, not so good if you want to have any kind of dexterity (i.e. play the piano) :D. i managed 9800 on a friends one after a lot of practice. the world champ gets like 16000 apparently. sickhead

I've just got 9516. I'm going to go for over 10000 tomorrow! Chris (housemate) has now got 11822.

Hmm, just read your comment Paul. The box propaganda says it is good for your whole arm and shoulder, and increases strength and dexterity for musisians (guitarists, drummers, pianists).

hmm, well im just gong on what a mate was telling me a couple of weeks ago. apparently muscle fibre grows in two main ways, one is to be very strong and grip for a long time, but doesnt respond quickly and its a kind of on/off sort of thing, theres much less control over how hard you grip. the other is to be essentially the opposite, and while quick flicking movments are easy gripping something fopr a long time is difficult. apparently it means that people like tennis players and rowers find it hard to play the piano. he might have just been talking rubbish of course :D but it does seem to make sense

I had a similar powerball query which I put to mark over email. I can see that the thing might give you some extra stability muscle or something, but if what you want to do is do a bench pull with 100kg on the bar I can't see how it is going to help as you are going to have a very limited range of movement.

Either way I want one (would have put one on a wedding present list, though not sure what my wife would have thought) cos they look cool. I also think an M1 competition is brewing. Might be more fun that the saxon chair thing...
